The veteran Congress leader and the former union minister, Vasant Sathe, who died in Gurgaon on Friday night of heart attack was an ardent supporter of separate Vidarbha.

Born on March 5, 1925 at Nashik in north Maharashtra, the veteran Congress politician received his early education at Bhonsale Military School and did his masters in Economics and Political Science at local Morris College.

Once a socialist and a protégé of noted trade unionist, Rambhau Ruikar, Sathe came to prominence in the Congress after Indira Gandhi split the party for a second time in late 70's. He was very close associate of late Gandhi and the former prime minister PV Narasimha Rao.

Known for his frank views, Sathe had initiated the proposal for a presidential form of the governance on the line of US and propagated for it in the country, on behalf of late Gandhi.

Sathe always felt that development of backward Vidarbha region of Maharashtra was possible only if it was carved out from Maharashtra. He was one o [...]
